It’s almost that time of year again! Time to write in earnest. I have participated in NaNoWriMo over the past few years (except for last year), and have found it a great motivator to keep me writing. I usually use the time to focus on working on my trilogy, but I think this year I am going to do something a little bit different. Now that I have my very own blog, I am going to add excerpts from my project here.
I am going to write mostly by the seat of my pants, and see what happens, though I am going to be working on a general idea, character concepts, and a very rough outline over the next couple weeks leading up to November 1st. It will be a brand new story, set in a world that I completely make up on the fly. I won’t be using any of my current world-building material for the novels that I’m working on currently.
Each day during NaNoWriMo, I will try to write four thousand words a day, which has been about my average in the past. I have been afraid to share my work with the rest of the world, so I’m going to be using this blog as a means of sharing a little of it publicly. I’m extremely shy when it comes to sharing my writing. But, if I am going to be a published writer someday, I need to come out of my shell and do something… well… public.
We will have to see where things go. Right now, my father is currently in the hospital after having a minor heart attack, but the situation is far more serious than we first thought. He has a 99% blockage of his main left artery, and typically this can result in a ‘widowmaker’ heart attack. He is due for a bypass surgery next week. So I may not actually have the time or the inclination to do NaNoWriMo this year, depending on where things stand with my dad.
It will be fine. I’m sure it will be fine. He’s a tough cookie and has been through so much. We’ve been through some rough relationship issues due to our differences in political alignment and religious ideology, but he’s still my dad, and I love him, and we’ve put all that behind us. Maybe someday, I’ll write a story about that too. But part of me thinks it’s better to leave the past in the past, and focus on the present and the future.
I suppose the first thing I should write about is the history behind the name Matylena. When I was in the 9th grade, my English teacher introduced our class to the Fantasy fiction genre by giving us an assignment to read J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Fellowship of the Ring” over Christmas break. We were then to… Read more
